THE FIRE THAT DOES NOT SHOUT - Pentecost Message

Rev. Fr. Austin Nwosu C.S.Sp.

  • The Spiritan Province of Nigeria South-East, in its Pentecost message for 2026, draws a powerful link between the coming celebration and the founding of the Congregation of the Holy Spirit on Pentecost day, 323 years ago. Noting that the Province’s own gathering on May 27th coincides with this anniversary, the message reframes Pentecost not as a noisy spectacle but as a quiet, sustaining fire. It acknowledges the deep, sleep-resistant exhaustion many carry—whether in families, among the young, or within religious life and counters it with a renewed understanding of the Holy Spirit as the one who strengthens the tired without demanding grand displays.

The message recalls that the first Spiritan seminarians were poor and overlooked, and that the Spirit works not through performance but through faithful endurance. It reminds readers of the silent waiting before the wind and fire of the first Pentecost, and of the locked doors behind which Christ breathed new life into his disciples. Rather than calling for spectacular renewal, the letter proposes an interior reopening of the heart, trusting that the same Spirit who raised an army from dry bones and birthed the Church from fear still sees the possibility of renewal in today’s exhaustion.

In closing, the Provincial Superior invites all to look to Mary, who waited prayerfully in the Upper Room, and to receive the Holy Spirit as the “Fire that does not shout” — a quiet courage to begin again. This Pentecost is offered not as mere liturgy but as a moment of real spiritual restoration for the weary.
